The 2-year-old filly DAYATTHESPA, owned in a partnership group that includes Bradley Thoroughbreds and Steve Laymon, handled the steep jump in class in today’s GIII Natalma S. at Woodbine with aplomb, running a strong second in just her second career outing. The New York-bred miss romped by four lengths in her debut at Saratoga Aug. 4 stretching clear by four lengths while stopping the clock for the 5 1/2-furlong grass dash in a spritely 1:03 flat. Stretching out, heading north and asked to take graded company for this, the chestnut was on the engine through a half in :46 2/5 and ran on gamely under Ramon Dominguez to complete the exacta, beaten 1 1/4 lengths. DAYATTHESPA, trained by Chad Brown, earned a 97 BRIS figure for her efforts. She now has earnings of $64,892 and, importantly, a graded placing. (Dayatthespa chart 9-17-11)
