Although the Feb. 27 $100,000 Mine That Bird Derby is worth no points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, the 1 1/16-mile contest for 3-year-olds is the local stepping stone to the March 27 $500,000 Sunland Park Derby, which is worth 50 points to the winner toward a spot in the starting gate on the first Saturday in May.
The Mine That Bird Derby, named for the fabled gelding who upset the 2009 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) at 50-1 after finishing fourth in the Sunland Derby, drew a field of eight sophomores for Sunday’s race. A host of invaders will take on local hopes Pepper Spray , Bye Bye Bobby , and Benissimo , the 1-2-3 finishers of Sunland Park‘s Riley Allison Derby Jan. 30.
