ERHU was named the Broodmare of the Week by the Daily Racing Form and it just so happens Bradley Thoroughbreds’ Pinhooking Venture will be selling her daughter by BLAME on Monday, March 24th at the Fasig-Tipton Florida Sale.
No sport offers up the potential for higher highs and lower lows than Thoroughbred racing, in which the pendulum can swing from triumph to tragedy in a nanosecond. That reality was thoroughly illustrated last Saturday, as Dress the Part won the Wayward Lass Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs just hours after her full sister, unbeaten Onlyforyou, was euthanized following a training mishap.
Both Onlyforyou and Dress the Part, daughters of Malibu Moon, were produced by Grade 3-placed Erhu, a 13-year-old Tactical Cat mare.
“Expensive filly finally putting it together,” owner Craig Bernick of Glen Hill Farm posted on his Twitter account regarding Dress the Part’s victory, adding that it was a “bittersweet day.”
Dress the Part is the most expensive foal to date out of Erhu, as Bernick purchased her for $700,000 out of the 2010 Keeneland September yearling sale. After winning once in her first seven starts, the filly has now captured three consecutive races. The Wayward Lass, which she won by
3 1/2 lengths, was her stakes debut, and the Tom Proctor trainee appears poised for continued success.
Onlyforyou also appeared headed for additional success this year, as she was considered a prominent contender for the Kentucky Oaks. The filly was a $115,000 purchase by John Greathouse’s Glencrest Farm, under the Phase II Thoroughbreds banner, at the 2012 Keeneland September yearling sale. Onlyforyou proceeded to win all four of her starts by open lengths,
including the Grade 2 Forward Gal Stakes and Grade 2 Davona Dale Stakes this year.
“We did have a lot of fun with her but we were hoping to have a lot more,” Greathouse said.
Onlyforyou was euthanized Saturday morning after suffering a condylar fracture while galloping out after a workout at Palm Meadows.
“Obviously, it’s a sad moment for everybody,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “The barn takes it hard when stuff like that happens, especially when it’s a filly like that who was perfect her whole career. It looked like she had a big future ahead.”
The dam of both fillies, Erhu, won three of 24 starts during her own racing career,
bankrolling $164,385. All her victories came on the turf, and she finished third in the Grade 3 Mint Julep Handicap on the lawn at Churchill Downs. The mare has produced three winners from as many starters, highlighted by Dress the Part and Onlyforyou.
There are two other fillies coming through the pipeline from the talented family, both by young sires Erhu is the dam of an unnamed juvenile by Blame, purchased by Bradley Thoroughbreds last summer at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga selected yearling sale. Blame’s first foals are set to race this season.
